Koki the parrot

KOKI: THE BIG YELLOW-CRESTED COCKATOO (CACATUA GALERITA)

The legend that lives on Brijuni Islands is Koki, the well-known Tito’s parrot; one of the rare exemplars of yellow-crested cockatooes which live up to 100 years and belong to big species of parrots which are characterized by very stocky posture, pretty robust and corpulent body measuring 50 cm in height, strong and robust bill with crest on its head. It is a very intelligent, sociable and gendle species of bird which likes bathing.

Koki was a gift that Josip Broz Tito made to his granddaughter Aleksandra – Saša Broz for her 9th birthday. For some period Koki was absent from Brijuni, but durnig the last three decades it is besides the elephants Sony and Lanka, one of the most attractive island inhabitant. Due to his contribution in the tourist affirmation of Brijuni islands, to Koki was assigned his “summer residence”, and during the summer period Koki sojourns in the vicinity of the hotel “Neptun-Istra”, not in the pheasant farm.

This white 52-years-old fellow with some yellow feathers, is the incarnation of a good tourist worker, a creature that knows how to animate, seduce and be the center of attention for unlimited time. He “speaks”, flaunts and sometimes wants even “give 5”, besides the parrot certainly knows many sigrets that Brijuni have…With him, that talks when is in great mood (Folks, how are you? What’s your name? Koki, Hello, Tito…) almost all the famous persons that have visited Brijuni took a photo (for example: the princess Caroline of Monaco, John Malkovich…)
